SUMMARY:Maintenance of Native Plant Gardens Through the Seasons
DESCRIPTION:Saturday August 8th\, 2026 | 10am\nChoose Your Price: $30 – $5\nNative plants are more than beautiful. They’re a living agreement with the land you tend and the creatures that depend on it. \nBut a native wildflower garden plays by different rules than a vegetable bed or a traditional flower border. What looks like a mess might be exactly right. What looks like it needs cutting back might be someone’s winter home. Getting that distinction wrong is easy. Getting it right is something Adam Bigelow will walk you through in full. \nThis class covers how to read your planting across all four seasons\, what each one asks of you\, and how to keep your garden both striking and ecologically sound year after year. \nWhat You’ll Cover: \n\nReading Your Garden’s Signals: What healthy native plantings look like at each point in the year\, and what signs call for intervention versus patient observation\nSpring Tasks: Which early-season jobs set the tone for everything that follows\, from leaf litter decisions to the timing of your first cutbacks\nSummer Growth and Support: How to manage vigorous spreaders\, support pollinators at their peak\, and keep things from getting away from you\nFall Prep Without Over-Tidying: Why the “clean garden” instinct works against native plantings in autumn\, and what to do instead\nWinter Structure and Wildlife Value: The case for leaving things standing longer than feels comfortable\, and what seed heads and stems give back to the birds and insects that need them\n\nThis class is for all-levels of gardening expertise. The only requirement is a willingness to learn and explore the wonderful ecosystem that native plants can bring to your home garden. \nHorticulturist Adam Bigelow is a self-proclaimed plant nerd\, with the kind of plant knowledge that makes a walk through the nursery feel like a field expedition. He brings a deep background in native plant ecology and a genuine gift for explaining the science and beauty of native plants in a fun and friendly way. \nPurchase your ticket at our new\, secure online portal here!

SUMMARY:The Bare Basics of Backyard Beekeeping
DESCRIPTION:Saturday August 29th\, 2026 | 10am\nChoose Your Price: $5 – $30\nMost people get into beekeeping for the honey and stay for everything else. A hive is a working colony of tens of thousands of insects running a system that has been refined for millions of years\, and you get a front row seat to it. \nThis class is for anyone who has been curious about backyard beekeeping and will help answer questions about the time\, effort and costs associated with it. \nTim starts inside the hive: who does what\, how a queen differs from a worker\, why the drones get shown the door every fall\, and how an egg becomes a foraging bee in about three weeks. Once you understand what the colony is trying to do\, the rest of beekeeping makes a lot more sense. \nThen the practical side. In this class\, you’ll touch on: \n\nHoneybee biology and the life cycle\, from egg to adult\nWhat actually happens inside a hive across the seasons\nThe equipment you need to start\, and the equipment you can skip\nWhere to buy hives\, tools\, and bees here in Western North Carolina\nWhat a first year realistically costs\nWhen to order bees\, since the good sources fill up months ahead\nHow the Macon County Beekeepers Association supports new keepers year round\n\nNo experience needed. You will not be opening a hive or handling bees in this session\, so come as you are. \nTim Maier is Vice President of the Macon County Beekeepers Association. \nPurchase your ticket at our new\, secure online portal here!
