Step One: Choose Your Vessel

We stock terrarium glass in a range of shapes and sizes, from squat little globes to tall apothecary jars. Some come with lids. Some come with a built-in light, which is a very nice touch when the sun goes down.

Already have a container you love? Bring it. If it holds soil and lets light in, it works.

Step Two: Build Your Layers

This is the scoop-what-you-need part, and you’ll keep track of your materials by weight on a sheet at the Build-Your-Own-Terrarium bar. 

Start with a drainage layer. Then comes color. Top it off with potting soil, blended to hold moisture without getting swampy. That’s the whole system.

Step Three: Pick Your Plants

Moss, ferns, mini foliage plants, and succulents all make excellent terrarium residents. Moss and ferns love the humidity of a closed, lidded vessel, while succulents want an open top and plenty of airflow. Match the plant to the container and your terrarium will thank you for years.

Step Four: Backfill and Finish

Tuck your plants in, backfill with potting soil, and add any finishing touches you like. Bring your item sheet to the register and you’re done. You walk out with something you made, not something you bought off a shelf.
