Icelandic Lambs for Sale in Western North Carolina
Icelandic Sheep are a fantastic dual-purpose animal.
They produce both excellent quality yarn and meat. As a primitive breed, they are hardy, staying outside all year round.
We rotate our flock regularly to fresh pasture, where they eat mixed grasses, clover and wildflowers. Our pastures are never treated with pesticides or artificial fertilizers. We check our sheep weekly for health concerns and parasites. We breed our sheep with parasite resistance in mind. During the colder months, their diet is supplemented with hay and an organic mix of alfalfa and sunflower seeds. Our flock is protected from predators by our donkey, the ever vigilant Mama Peaches.
Fleece
Icelandic fleeces are quite unique: the layer of wool closest to their skin is warm and downy, while the outer strands are coarser and waterproof. When spun together, they produce a warm, waterproof yarn. Their fleeces come in a variety of colours, ranging from creamy white, to deep brown, warm grey, and inky black.
Our sheep are shorn twice a year. The fall shearing is sold as whole fleeces to home spinners, who produce yarn or felt them into rugs. Wool from our spring shearing is often quite messy, as the animals have been outside all winter. We sell this wool as bird nesting material, or use it as a mulch around our vegetable garden.
Meat
We send our lambs to a local processor in October. Some years we also process older ewes into mutton. We sell a variety of cuts in our retail store.
The meat is known for its exceptional tenderness and is very lean. The taste is similar to veal, flavorful, but not gamey.
Live Animal Sales
We have eight lambs for sale this year: five rams and three ewes. All of our lambs are sired by the same ram.
Price on request. Six of our lambs are from registered lines, meaning their lineage is recorded as pure Icelandic Sheep. We register our animals with the Icelandic Sheep Breeders of North America. We will register your lamb with ISBONA on purchase.
We will inform you when your lamb is ready to collect. You will need to be able to collect your lamb(s) from our farm location in Franklin, North Carolina.
