Discover Foliar Feeding & Compost Extracts

September 26 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

There is a whole ecosystem living in a shovelful of good compost. Bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes, all of it working on your behalf. The catch is that most of it stays in the pile unless you do something to get it out and onto your plants.

That is what this workshop is about.

Jeff and Adam of The Soil Guys are running two hands-on demonstrations. First, applying Soil Surge FPE, their fermented plant extract, two different ways: as a foliar spray with a backpack sprayer and as a soil drench with a watering can. Then they’ll pull a sample from a Johnson-Su bioreactor and put it under a microscope on screen, then pull a second sample after extraction and do it again. The difference between the two is the entire argument for extracts, and it is a lot more persuasive when you watch it than when someone describes it.

In this class, you’ll discover:

  • How compost extracts differ from raw compost, and why extraction matters
  • When to feed the leaves and when to feed the soil
  • How to use a backpack sprayer and a watering can to apply extracts at home
  • What a healthy soil food web actually looks like under magnification

Wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. The hands-on portions are optional, so you’re welcome to watch and ask questions instead.

About The Soil Guys: Jeff is a co-founder of The Soil Guys and the group’s microscopy lead, with a knack for turning the soil food web into something you can see rather than just read about. Adam, also a co-founder, enjoys the complexity of living soil and is good at connecting soil chemistry, biology, and management decisions without losing anyone along the way. He also leads a successful global company outside of The Soil Guys.
